R&D Engineer with expertise in integrated photonics and electronics for technology transfer project

At EPFL we have been part of the next generation of developments, and have pioneered (published and patented) ultra-low loss nonlinear integrated photonics, notably chip scale frequency combs, which have applications ranging from massively parallel coherent communication for datacenters, to ultra-fast coherent LiDAR for autonomous driving. 

Within the framework of a funded tech transfer project, we are looking for an R&D engineer/scientist with industrial and/or academic experience to work on the industrialization of a novel photonic integrated technology for use in the domain of telecommunication and ultrafast LiDAR, with the aim of launching a spin-off.

The candidate’s role will be to participate in the development of the laboratory demonstrator from the current stage of research prototype to a demonstrator that can be manufactured via foundry, and for use in applications. The candidate will be responsible for integrated photonics design, packaging and the engineering of custom electronic, optical and mechanical solutions for the system together with an internal team and external contractors, as well as participate in the in-house and field-testing of the final product with potential customers.

Located in Lausanne, EPFL has a campus-like environment situated on the shores of Lakes Geneva and offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence.  The LPQM hosts a unique infrastructure, with a multi-million CHF investments in the in-house laboratory-based testing, and in-house silicon photonics foundry.

Main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Development of custom electronic and optical subsystem
  • Experience in silicon photonics design, packaging
  • Participate in the mechanical design of the product and development of fiber-chip packaging solutions
  • Participate in the photonic chip design and testing
  • Development of the system control software
  • Reporting and documentation of the system development progress

 

Your Profile:

For this position, we are looking for solution-oriented candidates who match some of the parts below:

  • MSc in electrical engineering or physics
  • Industrial experience is an asset
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: III-V semiconductor lasers  and optoelectronics, silicon photonics design, integrated electronics, RF engineering, optical/electrical packaging, system design, or MEMS.
  • Familiarity with key software, including CAD software, Python and MATLAB, SiP design tools
  • Working experience on similar projects bringing the basic research technologies towards the market as well as system integration/ telecom technologies/LiDAR - is a plus
  • Experience in proposal writing is an asset

The candidate’s role will be to participate in all aspects of the successful technology transfer to the startup, from the development of the laboratory demonstrator of the current stage of research prototype to a demonstrator that can be manufactured via foundry. The candidate will be responsible for integrated photonics design, packaging and the engineering of custom electronic, optical and mechanical solutions leading an internal team and external contractors, as well as participate in in-house and field-testing. Other key responsibilities include filing of new IP, scouting first costumers and assistance in preparation
of the startup financing and business plan. The initial appointment is at the university for a duration of max 1 year. The aim is the launch of a startup.

How your daily tasks will look like:

What the ideal candidate brings along:

- At least 3 years of professional experience in the practical application of a C programming language as well as firmware development on microcontrollers (ideally with IAR Workbench)

- Very good knowledge in the use of an ECAD tool (ideally Mentor)

- Very good technical understanding of mechatronics (mark in CV)

- Very good knowledge of German (min. C1) and good knowledge of English (min. B2), both written and spoken, are required

- Experience with C# and Matlab is an advantage

- First work experience in medical technology is an advantage

Partnerinserat Data-driven control for industrial applications - PhD position 100%, Zurich, fixed-term The Institute for Automation at FHNW and the Automatic Control Laboratory at ETH Zurich jointly offer this PhD position based in Brugg, Switzerland, within NCCR Automation. The position will be supervised by Prof. Dr. John Lygeros and Dr. Alisa Rupenyan at ETH Zurich, and Prof. Dr. Jürg Keller at FHNW Brugg-Windisch. Project background Research in robotics has seen incredible progress in the last years, driven by the incorporation of sensor data in the control algorithms of the robotic systems. Learning has enabled self-driving, autonomous flight, and humanoid robots to reach milestones that were previously unthinkable. Such exciting development is much slower adopted in modern manufacturing processes. The current state of technology in manufacturing is mature enough to accommodate and benefit from data-driven, learning-based approaches. Incorporating efficient use of predictive models and advanced control using process data opens up new possibilities for emerging manufacturing processes. The research activities within these projects will bring forward the integration of advanced control methods in combination with machine learning. We work towards creating a data-informed automation framework that will be demonstrated on high-end industrial systems, unifying ideas from black box adaptive control, iterative learning, and predictive control. The approach consists of three pillars: scalability: ensuring that multiple parameters can be optimized simultaneously safety: ensuring that each combination of parameters is within the safe operational bounds of the motion system efficiency: ensuring that optimal parameters are found with a minimal number of iterations Job description The research activities in this interdisciplinary field comprise several of the following activities: use and comprehension of a system/process model using sensor data and plant parameters adaptation or development of an appropriate control algorithm, applying an optimization-based approach demonstration on the system The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and is part of the NCCR Automation, which means a close interaction with 16 control groups and 42 PhDs and postdocs across Switzerland on this project.
